We are always on the lookout for exceptional holiday experiences. Before starting a family, it was backpacking trips to distant lands, but with kids, priorities change. Infrastructure, safety, and entertainment for the little ones become more important, yet we still don’t want to miss out on adventure. Therefore, in the summer of 2019, we decided for the first time on a houseboat vacation in Slovenia and Italy – a unique opportunity to be close to the sea while enjoying the freedom and flexibility that package holidays often lack.
What is a Houseboat?
Although the term “houseboat” is not technically correct, we still use it to describe floating homes that serve as floating houses on inland waters. Unlike traditional boats, these do not have their own propulsion and are often used as floating accommodations on vacation.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Houseboat Vacations Overview
Advantages of Houseboat Vacations:
- A special adventure for children with a steering wheel and the opportunity to watch ships and fish.
- A sense of freedom and closeness to nature by living on the water.
- Flexibility in meal times due to the possibility of self-catering.
- Relaxed sleep thanks to the gentle rocking and fresh sea air.
- Cooling off just a few steps away and pleasant temperatures due to sea breezes.
- Away from mass tourism, peace, and quality family time.
- Separate room for children on board creates a homely feeling.
- Parent time in the evening on the boat terrace near sleeping children.
- No boating license required as the boat does not move.
- Also dog-friendly with special amenities such as a whirlpool or shower on board.
Disadvantages of Houseboat Vacations:
- No all-inclusive, self-catering or dining out necessary.
- Some housework and limited room service.
- No animation or party on board.
- Grilling and open fires not possible.
- Safety aspects, especially with small children near water.
- The houseboat remains stationary and cannot be driven.
- Not suitable for those seeking animation and entertainment.
Our Tip:
The advantages clearly outweigh for families looking for a little adventure and closeness to nature, while disadvantages such as self-catering and limited room service can be accepted.

- Well-equipped interior with air conditioning, TV, and kitchen equipment.
- Three terraces, including one with a whirlpool and automatic shading.
- Beach, bar, and playground in close proximity.
- Dog-friendly.
Disadvantages:
- Missing child safety locks require increased attention.
- Limited privacy due to tight placement of houseboats.
- Slight movement during storms.
Highlights:
- Panoramic view from the houseboat terrace of yachts and open sea.
- Private whirlpool on the terrace.
Houseboat Vacation in Italy – Family Adventure in Lignano
