Hotel Hinteregger : A Winter Hideaway in the Hohe Tauern National Park
Nestled in the heart of Osttirol’s winter wonderland lies a unique hideaway: Hotel Hinteregger in Matrei. Combining rural charm with urban sophistication, this hotel welcomed my sister and me with the warmth and hospitality of its hosts, Katharina and Bernd Hradecky. From the very first moment, we felt right at home.
The Hotel: Tradition Meets Modernity
“We preserve the traditions of the past while integrating innovation, modern architecture, and design,” explains host Katharina Hradecky. This philosophy is evident throughout the hotel. Historic features like the cozy farmhouse parlor, adorned with a pine Christmas tree and traditional zither player, tell stories of days gone by – the parlor once served as the first supermarket in Matrei. At the same time, the hotel’s modern architectural additions impress with their contemporary elegance.
A highlight of our stay was the wellness area. Designed with natural materials such as stone, wood, clay, and water, it blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. From the sauna, we enjoyed a breathtaking view of the natural swimming pond, while the cozy library offered a quiet place to unwind. Our room, the “Goaststraubm,” featured a freestanding bathtub that provided luxurious relaxation. However, my favorite spot in the hotel was by the fireplace, a warm retreat after adventurous days in the snow.
Regional Delights: The Cuisine
Hotel Hinteregger’s culinary offerings set a high standard, showcasing the diverse flavors of Osttirol. A memorable highlight was visiting the Blaßnig family, who operate a fish farm at 1650 meters above sea level. Their freshly caught Arctic char was a star of one unforgettable dinner.
The kitchen team focuses on slow food and regional organic ingredients, many sourced directly from the Hradecky family’s own farm. Local specialties like Schlipfkrapfen and Ingsante Nigele are prepared with care and reflect the rich traditions of Osttirol’s cuisine.
Skiing in Osttirol: Unique and Unspoiled
Skiing in Osttirol offers a refreshing alternative to crowded resorts. Just steps from the hotel lies the “Großglockner Ski Resort Kals-Matrei,” one of the most beautiful ski areas in the Alps. With 18 modern lifts and gondolas and 44.6 kilometers of slopes, it provides variety and tranquility in equal measure.
What sets Osttirol apart is the absence of long lift lines, leaving plenty of space to savor the snowy mountain scenery. At an altitude of over 2600 meters, the resort offers stunning views of 60 peaks over 3000 meters tall, including those in the Glockner, Schober, and Granatspitz ranges. Skiing here is an unforgettable experience.
More Than Skiing: Winter Adventures in Osttirol
Osttirol has much to offer beyond skiing. One of my favorite activities was snowshoe hiking with a National Park ranger. This peaceful experience provided fascinating insights into the flora and fauna of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The region is ideal for winter hiking, ski touring, and cross-country skiing. Tobogganing on natural sledding tracks or tackling an icy challenge at the ice park adds even more variety to a winter getaway.
Conclusion: A Winter Dream in the Mountains
Hotel Hinteregger in Matrei is more than just a place to stay – it’s a destination where tradition and modernity, nature and design, indulgence and adventure come together seamlessly. For those seeking relaxation and inspiration in the Hohe Tauern National Park, this hideaway offers a truly magical winter retreat.
