48 Hours with Kids in Berlin: An Unforgettable Weekend
Day 1: Arrival and Exploration of Berlin
Overnight Stay at Scandic Potsdamer Platz
Our weekend in Berlin began at the family-friendly Scandic Potsdamer Platz. The spacious family rooms and the children’s play area made our stay comfortable. The hotel is located in a modern, safe area, with the U2 line directly connecting us to Alexanderplatz, the perfect starting point for our explorations.
Breakfast with a View at the TV Tower
We started our day with breakfast at the Berlin TV Tower. The rotating restaurant not only offers a delicious meal but also a breathtaking view of the city. A highlight for the kids was the World Clock at Alexanderplatz, which displays the time in famous cities around the globe.
Sightseeing with the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus
Our exploration began with the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus tour. In about 120 minutes, we admired Berlin’s key attractions. The bus provides multilingual commentary, and we hopped off for photos and brief explorations, such as at the Brandenburg Gate or Kurfürstendamm. We took a coffee break at the cozy 2D Cafe “Always Together” on Marburger Strasse. We also stopped at Museum Island to listen to street musicians and relax on the grass.
Lunch and Boat Tour
Back at Alexanderplatz, we opted for lunch at Frittenwerk, which was a hit with the kids. Afterwards, we joined a boat tour on the Spree, included in the Hop-On-Hop-Off ticket. The boat ride offered a unique view of the city and was a lovely way to end the afternoon.
Dinner at Potsdamer Platz
Potsdamer Platz is a vibrant hub in the heart of Berlin, blending history and modernity in an impressive way. Once divided by the Berlin Wall, it is now a symbol of reunified Berlin. Here, you’ll find modern architecture, cinemas, theaters, and shopping centers like the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden. The square is perfect for an evening stroll, enjoying the impressive lighting of the surrounding buildings. For dinner, we recommend either the Indian restaurant AMRIT or the Italian Monte Mente, both located near Potsdamer Platz.
Day 2: Zoo Visit and More Highlights in Berlin
Breakfast at The Dawn
We started our second day with breakfast at The Dawn, a restaurant offering a beautiful view of the Monkey Hill at Berlin Zoo. It was the perfect spot to kick off our day at the zoo.
Visit to Berlin Zoo
Berlin Zoo, one of the oldest and most species-rich zoos in Germany, provided us with an exciting morning. The large playground, where the kids could burn off some energy, was especially impressive. If you have more time, the aquarium is also worth a visit and can be accessed with a combination ticket.
Museums and Indoor Activities
Back at Potsdamer Platz, we visited the German Museum and the German Spy Museum, both educational and fascinating for school-age children. Alternatively, families with younger kids can check out the nearby Lego Discovery Center.
East Side Gallery and Dinner
In the evening, we took bus line 300 to the East Side Gallery, where we admired the impressive artwork on the longest preserved section of the Berlin Wall. For dinner, we recommend either Shibuya for Japanese cuisine or Pirates Berlin for international dishes. A fun family tip: the Teledisko at Uber Place adds extra excitement for the kids.
Conclusion
Our weekend in Berlin was filled with exciting experiences and family-friendly activities. From the breathtaking breakfast at the TV Tower to the visit to Berlin Zoo and the impressive East Side Gallery, Berlin offered a wide range of highlights. The central location of our hotel made it easy to reach all the main attractions quickly. Berlin is a city with plenty to offer both adults and children, and we highly recommend it as a destination for an unforgettable family weekend.
We’ll definitely be back and look forward to hearing your tips for our next city trip to Berlin!
